Winter Engine Upkeeping for Boats and Motors

Mar. 15, 2024

What we know about winter engine and outboard motor maintenance work, its elements are basically inseparable from the water, electricity and oil, anti-freeze, anti-corrosion and anti-leakage content.

The winter use of marine engines, no matter what kind (inboard, outboard), should pay special attention to avoid freezing, rust and corrosion, in order to ensure that it is maintained in good condition during the months-long downtime, to be used next year when the temperature rises, can be healthy and rejuvenated its surging power, this is the meaning of winter maintenance.

Our team and production

1,For the engine to be sealed, after disembarkation, you need to use special flushing device for fresh water flushing operation of the internal waterway of the machine, if possible, you can use professional rust removal cleaning solution for flushing, this can effectively discharge the impurities in the waterway, also can flush out the sewage and salt, reduce the risk of corrosion blockage inside the waterway during storage.

2, Once the boat is ashore, the battery should be removed from the boat as far as possible and stored in a cool, dry place. It can be maintained by using spot charging, no less than 2 hours per charge, to ensure that the battery is maintained in good condition; otherwise, if it is not charged for a long time, the battery will lose power and be scrapped prematurely.

3, Drain all external cooling water from the engine, and for boats still in use in cold weather, do the same after berthing each day; for closed cooling engines internal antifreeze does not need to be drained, but the right grade needs to be chosen according to the temperature conditions to avoid freezing of the cylinder block and waterway components.

For outboard engines, the most important feature is that they have an automatic drainage function when placed vertically, so don't forget to lower the engine to a vertical position or cover it with a waterproof cover to prevent damage to the engine or gearbox caused by freezing water generated by rain or snow.

4. For external engine parts, repair any missing paint on the engine surface with marine-specific anti-corrosion paint. The external metal surfaces of the engine (except the anodes) can be protected against corrosion by spraying an anti-corrosion spray.

For internal engine parts, the spark plugs can be removed and some anti-corrosion spray can be sprayed into each cylinder, disc the engine for one cycle, so that the sealant is evenly distributed in each cylinder, thus playing a sealing and anti-corrosion effect.

5, You also need to check the mid-range bellows, anti-surge valve, water pump impeller, drive belt and other perishable and easy to age but important parts, if there are any abnormalities, you need to replace them before using them in the coming year. Check the machine for other faults and problems, and solve them together during the period of disuse, otherwise an inadvertent omission can have serious consequences.

6, Operate the throttle control every few weeks during storage to prevent corrosion of the moving parts.

This is all that CALONGLORIA has to say about the maintenance of marine engines before winter, space is limited and we hope that the above will help to keep your boats and machines young and vibrant. We sell outboard engines of all horsepower and welcome your enquiries.
