To test the outboard ignition module (commonly known as CDI (capacitor discharge ignition) box), you need a multimeter. Firstly, ensure that the outboard engine is turned off and disconnect the battery cable to prevent accidental ignition. Find the CDI box (usually located near the ignition system) and disconnect it from the engine.
Set the multimeter to the appropriate voltage range according to the specifications in the outboard motor manual. Connect the positive lead of the multimeter to the main terminal of the CDI box, and connect the negative lead to the grounding point on the engine. Repeat this process for the secondary terminal and other related terminals (such as triggers and charging coils). Compare the reading on the multimeter with the expected value provided in the manufacturer's manual. If the reading exceeds the expected range, it may indicate a problem with the CDI box and may require replacement.
