It's frustrating to see any part of the ship damaged, especially when it's the lower part of the hull, which can be really painful.
There may be various problems with the bottom equipment of the ship, such as water ingress into the gear lubricating oil, damage to the water pump impeller, leakage of seals, and bending of propellers. If you want your outboard engine to perform at its best, you need to address these issues immediately!
So how do you know if there is a problem with the lower device of your outboard engine?
The following are some typical signs and symptoms indicating damage to the lower components of the outboard engine:
1. Discoloration of gear lubricating oil
If you see foam or turbid liquid, metal particles, unpleasant smell in the oil tank or milky white liquid on the dipstick, it is likely that water has entered the gear lubricating oil (possibly due to water seal failure, water leakage from the drain plug or stuck drain valve).
2. The lower part of the hull is emitting strange noises
If you hear a whining, whistling, or grinding sound from the lower device, it is likely that the water pump impeller is worn or damaged.
3. Leakage of gear oil or other liquids
If you find oil stains in the water or wet spots near the lower device (or abnormal increase in fuel consumption), it indicates that the seals or gaskets of the lower device are leaking and need to be repaired or replaced immediately.
4. The propeller is bent or damaged
Another obvious sign of a malfunction in the lower part of the outboard engine is a bent or damaged propeller, which may be caused by common wear, vibration of the lower part, or impact with underwater obstacles such as rocks and reefs.
5. Decrease in power or performance
If you find that your engine is not as powerful as before or even locked, there may be a problem with the lower components of your outboard engine (such as a damaged gearbox or broken propeller).
All the above symptoms indicate that you need to take the outboard engine to a professional and resolve the issue as soon as possible.
