Due to historical and linguistic reasons, the term 'outboard motor' is usually used as' engine 'instead of' engine '. The first outboard propulsion system was electric, developed by Gustave Trouv é in the late 19th century, which may have led to the use of the term 'motor' as it referred to electric motor components.
Over time, the difference between "engine" and "engine" has become increasingly blurred, especially because "engine" originally came from the Latin word "movere", meaning "to move", and was later used as a device to induce motion, while "engine" originated from "ingenium", referring to a device that is original or generates power. Although today's outboard systems typically include internal combustion engines, the term 'engine' still exists, especially in British English, to describe a complete propulsion system that includes the engine, gearbox, and drive mechanism.
