ABOUT OUTBOARDS

An outboard motor is a system for powering a boat that consists of a self-contained unit that integrates the engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive, and is designed to be mounted externally at the stern of a boat. It is the most common form of power for small watercraft. In addition to providing power, outboard motors also provide directional control capabilities because they can be rotated on their mounting brackets to adjust the direction of thrust. The rudder blades on the bottom of the motor can also act as a rudder when the engine is not working. Compared to inboard motors, outboard motors are easy to remove for storage and maintenance.

Q: How can I tell what shaft length my outboard needs to be?

A: Measure from the top of your transom to the bottom of your keel. If this measurement is between 15" and 17", you'll need a Calon outboard with a 'short' shaft. If it is between 20" and 22", you'll need our 'long' shaft outboard. Calon outboard shafts are measured from the bottom of the engine mounting bracket to the cavitation plate on the lower unit. Generally, most boats require either a short or long shaft, although some boats may need a 25" (ultra-long) shaft outboard. We recommend consulting with your local dealer to determine the correct shaft length for your specific boat. We now supply two types of transom heights for our outboards.
