Outboard Motor Life: How Long Will They Last?

Whether you have an older boat with an old motor or a new one, it's important to know how much life your outboard motor has left before it gives out. From maintenance to aging to the model, many factors can affect the lifespan of an outboard motor.

On average, an outboard motor will run for about 1,500 hours or 7 to 8 years. Each motor will be different, but if you continue to maintain and take care of it, it can last much longer.

How Long They Last

Let's take a deeper look at the lifespan of outboard motors. "The number of hours a boat engine runs depends heavily on the amount and quality of maintenance performed over the years."

Maintenance isn't the only way to keep an outboard running. If an outboard is used regularly, it is more likely to last longer. Users on marine forums often say that a well-used and well-maintained engine will last longer than one that sits idle and isn't maintained. An engine with 400-500 hours of use over 5 years is probably more reliable than an engine with only 20 hours of use over the same period.

What Causes Outboard Failures

Outboards are known to have problems and can break down, not just wear out. That's why outboards last longer if they are properly cared for and maintained. When outboards sit idle without much use, or if they are used without proper inspection, they tend to develop several problems. So, what are the things that can go wrong?

The Appearance of the Oil

The appearance and level of your oil need to be regularly checked and maintained. When inspecting your oil, you must check several things. The first thing to check is the oil level. There should always be enough oil in the motor to keep it running smoothly and to avoid any potential problems. In addition to this, the consistency of the oil should also be checked.

Electrical Problems

If there is a problem with the outboard, a common cause to suspect is an electrical issue. Check the batteries and connections to ensure everything is properly connected and free of corrosion. If the battery is dead, recharge it promptly. If the battery does not start despite being charged, check the throttle position and ensure all battery connections are secure and corrosion-free.

Temperature Problems

Outboards are cooled by water, which means that if the cooling system fails for any reason, the outboard is at high risk of overheating. It is important to be aware of these issues, as temperature problems are also common in outboards.

If no water is flowing through the "notice" valve, it indicates the cooling system has stopped, and immediate action is required.

Fuel Flow Issues

Another common cause of outboard problems is fuel flow issues. Always fill the tank before heading out, and check for leaks and blockages during routine maintenance.

If the outboard won't start or sputters despite having gasoline, check the fuel lines for clogs or leaks.

Oil Level is Too High: This is likely an indication that water has somehow entered the oil. When this happens, the oil will appear "milky." If the oil is both too high and milky, it is critical to address this issue as soon as possible.

Oil Level is Too Low: If the oil level is too low, this could indicate an oil leak. If this problem persists, the motor may eventually seize, leading to corrosion and oil leaks.

Gasoline vs. Diesel Outboards

There are also differences in the lifespan of gasoline and diesel outboards. Gasoline outboard engines typically last around 1,500 hours with proper maintenance. The first 1,000 hours usually pass without significant problems. After 1,000 hours, minor issues may start to appear.

On the other hand, diesel outboards have about three times the lifespan of gasoline outboards, with an average life expectancy of around 5,000 hours. Some diesel engines can last up to 8,000 hours if properly maintained.
