FAQ
Q: How to Choose the Right Propeller for Outboard Motors
A: When selecting a propeller, there are two key measurements to consider: diameter and pitch. The diameter refers to the distance from one end of the rotating blade circle to the other, measured across the hub. Pitch indicates how far a boat moves with a single complete rotation of the propeller, assuming no slippage. For example, an 11" x 9" propeller has an 11-inch diameter and a 9-inch pitch. In theory, this propeller would push the boat forward by 9 inches per revolution; however, slippage usually causes the actual distance to be slightly less.
Choosing a propeller with a higher pitch will typically increase the boat's top speed, but may reduce acceleration or "hole-shot" performance. On the other hand, a lower-pitch propeller will boost hole-shot speed, making it ideal for activities such as water skiing, but at the expense of top-end speed.
Important: Always ensure the propeller you select does not allow the engine to exceed the manufacturer's recommended maximum RPM. Differences in boat hull shape, load capacity, and specific use cases can affect the boat's performance. It's strongly advised to use a tachometer to verify that the engine is running within the safe RPM range to avoid performance issues or engine damage.
